Alex is a well-connected and highly respected intellectual property (IP) manager who has built his reputation on the back of 16+ years in the telecoms arena.
Following his graduation 1998, Alex started out as an engineer, initially within the shipbuilding industry before moving into the telecoms industry where he joined Vodafone in late 1999. He delivered a number of successful programmes that were critical to the ongoing rollout and expansion of Vodafone’s 2G and 3G networks before moving into a more commercially focussed role, as competitor and market intelligence analyst in 2007. The role had a direct impact on the Vodafone board as business-critical insight and intelligence was regularly presented to the senior management at a time when the UK market featured a number of new, disruptive competitors and tactical changes were needed on a regular basis to ensure and maintain Vodafone’s market leadership position.
Alex was appointed Global Intellectual Property Rights Manager at Vodafone in 2007 where he was able to combine his commercial and technical backgrounds to great effect. With oversight of Vodafone’s global IP portfolio and associated strategy, Alex led the company’s IP team through several periods of business change, influencing senior management and delivering revenue to the business through patent sales and licensing whilst growing the overall size and quality of the portfolio. By the end of 2015, Alex had established Vodafone as #6 for UK companies filing at the EPO.
During his time at Vodafone, Alex developed a global network of educated IP contacts throughout the organisation and overcame a range of challenges such as cultural differences, portfolio management, IP awareness, reward/recognition and budget management, to ensure the successful delivery of a sustainable programme for managing IPR.
In April 2017, Alex was appointed Director of Strategy at Coller IP Management.
Alex has 2 published patents, is a member of IAM (Intellectual Asset Management) and will be listed on the IAM 300 (The World’s Leading IP Strategists) in 2017. Alex has also authored a chapter “Encouraging and supporting Innovation” for the forthcoming publication, Intellectual Property Strategy: A Practical Guide to IP Management.
Alex is married with 3 children and lives in Hampshire, UK.
