Dr Pippa Tolfts

Pippa is an experienced European Patent Attorney and Chartered Patent Attorney having worked 10 years in private practice, drafting and prosecuting patent applications for a wide range of clients drawn from individual inventors, university departments and associated spin-out companies and multi-national corporations. Her experience has included prosecuting and defending oppositions at the EPO and appeal proceedings before the EPO. Her work has also encompassed providing opinions on the validity and infringement of patents. In addition, she has extensive experience of filing and prosecuting UK and European design applications. Pippa is a valuable mentor for trainees taking UK and European patent qualifying examinations.
Pippa gained a doctorate in physical chemistry after studying Chemistry and Mathematics at the University of Southampton (BSc. Hons. First). Her PhD studies encompassed surface morphology of III-V semi-conductor materials in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College, London. Before entering the IP profession she undertook post-doctoral work at Imperial College, funded by the EPSRC, looking at growth and deposition of semi-conductor materials in ultra-high vacuum by molecular-beam epitaxy. She has been the author or co-author of technical papers in the field of semi-conductors.
Since graduating, Pippa has gained sound understanding of the different IP commercialisation issues and patenting challenges facing businesses across many industrial sectors encompassing the application of chemistry, electronics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering and instrumentation. The focus of her work at Coller IP is providing cost effective processes, bespoke solutions and competitive advantage for clients.
Building on her pre-existing experience, since joining Coller IP, Pippa has increased the breadth of industries/sectors with which she has worked to include medicinal chemistry, leading edge battery technologies, sample preparation devices, technologies used in the oil and gas industries and renewable energy technologies. She has also provided due diligence support to clients involved with the commercialisation of global IP portfolios and associated valuations.
